I hadn’t cleaned my friend’s car since the 14th of August. Went up last Wednesday to clean her again. Other than some traffic film and general dirt she was pretty clean but rather than do a quick wash and go. I spent three and a half hours going over everything again.
One of four obviously.
I definitely need to get out more.

C.L.E.A.N. Props man, I usually make a half-hearted attempt once every couple of months and try to pro-actively prevent it from getting dirty inside in the mean time.
How do you deal with sand/dirt in the black carpeting? I’ve been able to get the interior looking nearly spotless except that darn dirt.

You want to come wash my Focus?

Cheers fella. I know car cleaning is my thing but sometimes I think I should just stop when I get to clean rather than going over it all again.
Sand in carpets is a real pain in the arse. Lightly wet and agitate the area first and use a wet vacuum to vacuum it up but best way is preventative by using good quality mats.

Why are you cleaning your friend’s car?

Oooh. A Mk1 Focus. Old school. Ye’, why not. Should I come to you or you bring it to me. :)

I’m probably going to go through two cars this weekend, I shall try your advise! I plan on getting some of those fancy Weather-Tech custom fit mats for the Mazda this winter, last one landed my some salt-crusted carpeting that I haven’t fully been able to recover.

I’ve always cleaned friends and colleagues cars.
I’ve cleaned the owner of this friends cars for about four years.
She likes a clean car but not cleaning them and I love cleaning them, it’s a very symbiotic relationship we’ve got.

Ye’, sand and short haired dog hairs are the worst.

Come on over! The car is actually silver, not bronze. The stupid sprinkler system where I live sprays rusty water all over the lawn, and some of our cars. So you’ll need a buffer or a bit of elbow grease to take that off. ;)
Actually, I’m waiting until they finally shut off the sprinklers (they’re still running them at night) so I can give it a buff before winter hits and it’s too cold. With any luck I’ll be moved elsewhere before I have to deal with this again next spring...

Oh boy, one of my previous vehicles was a hand-me-down beater Buick that my dad allowed dogs/goats (not joking, we sometimes had to move goats via the Buick if the trailer was in used for horses or such) in.
Over nearly 4 years of ownership I never got all that hair out. No animals allowed in my current vehicles!

Silver is very good to work with. It doesn’t especially look clean or dirty and so is easy to maintain.
I hope you get chance to work on your car soon. Having them spray rusty water all over isn’t the best idea in the world.

As some who has detailed vehicles with Weather-Tech mats before, they get a good review from me.

You are a strange person... but strange in a good way.

I did an acquaintances 2005 Ford Focus Mk1 and posted the results on here. It was awful.
Here’s a few pics.
Six and a half hours well spent doing the interior, didn’t get chance to do the exterior.

I get to look after some nice metal and they’ve become regulars.
The Golf gets done monthly so far.
Focus Mk2 gets done bi-monthly.
Eos gets done weekly.
Focus Mk2 RS gets done quarterly.
207 gets done monthly.
It’s very therapeutic. It’s just me and the car. You can’t think about how crap work was because your concentrating on removing the dirt with out causing any damage to the vehicle.

You do really nice work.

Thanks. It’s my therapy and the car owners like it.

Do you make your living detailing?

No I do it for free. I work nights at a supermarket (first night back tonight actually after having ten nights off holiday) which pays the bills.
When I do a car it’s like a relaxing therapy for me and I get a kick out of it and the owners get a kick out of having a clean like new car. Money complicates the issue and devalues the time and effort spent. They often insist I take a bottle of whiskey or crate of Guinness but I’ve told them not to.

That’s very nice of you. I’m sure the recipients of your services are happy, too.

Ye’, which is a great bonus, the lass that owns the Ford Focus had a Renault Megane in metallic blue. When she traded it in for a silver Vauxhall Astra the salesman pointed out how well the car was looked after to which she replied “it looks a lot better than the cars you’ve got”. When ever she goes to her other job cleaning a big house on a country estate, the owners always ask if she’s got a new car again (by all accounts they don’t look after their Maserati, Range Rovers or Audis) which she says always makes her feel great.

I remember reading this! That’s insane, I wasn’t that worried about it as it was just my beater at the time. Looking at all that hair makes me shudder.

I need to pay someone and have my car properly done up.
It’s not filthy but the dust and hairs make me crazy

It’s worth doing. I’ve just spent eight hours over two days doing an electricians car (Vauxhall Astra aka Saturn Astra) after he’d used it for work after his work van packed in and was waiting to be fixed. Three hours on the outside and five ours scrubbing the inside and he was very pleased with it and said he’d start looking after it better.
